Big Bend, Texas: 13,000 Years of Occupation in a Desert Canyon

In the Big Bend region at the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert in west Texas, canyons carved by the Rio Grande served as seasonal refuges for generations of hunter-gatherersHunter-gatherersA way of life based on hunting, fishing and gathering wild resources, without farming or herding; it dominated almost the whole of human history. for more than 13,000 years. It is in one of these rock shelters, at San Esteban, that archaeologists from the Center for Big Bend Studies unearthed a remarkable deposit: a set of hunting weapons approximately 6,500 years old, preserved in exceptional condition by the extreme aridity of the environment.1 The discovery was reported by the New York Times in 2025.

The desert's climatic conditions allowed the survival of organic materials that ordinarily vanish from archaeological sites in temperate or humid settings. A Complete Arsenal, Deliberately Broken

The weapon assemblage includes several distinct components. The atlatlatlatlA spear-thrower, a hooked stick that extends the hunter's arm and increases a dart's range, used before the adoption of the bow. (from the Nahuatl word), an elongated wooden board fitted with a hook at one end, forms the core of the system. By artificially extending the thrower's arm, it doubles or triples dart velocity, turning it into a formidable weapon against large game. Associated with the atlatl, archaeologists identified hardwood foreshafts, longer rear shafts, and a particularly unusual element: a straight throwing stick, similar in principle to a non-returning boomerang, specialised for hunting small game such as rabbits.

What most strikes researchers is not the diversity of the arsenal but its condition: every piece is broken. Specialists suggest the deposit represents either a repair cache - hunters storing damaged equipment to fix during a later stop - or a deliberate abandonment before a long migration. This caching practice is documented among numerous hunter-gatherer cultures worldwide: damaged equipment is not discarded but stored or recycled for future use.

The deposit also included a pronghorn hide and coprolites - fossilised faeces. The latter potentially allow researchers, through content analysis, to reconstruct the diet of the site's occupants.1

The "Old Wood Problem": An Important Methodological Nuance

Radiocarbon dating of the weapons yielded an age of approximately 6,500 years before present. However, archaeologists highlight what they call the "old wood problem": in a desert environment where scarce fuel was carefully conserved, inhabitants frequently reused dead wood collected long after its death. If a tree died 200 or 300 years before being fashioned into an atlatl, radiocarbon dating of the wood will overestimate the actual age of the tool. The 6,500-year figure should therefore be interpreted as a maximum age for the weapons' actual manufacture.

This nuance does not diminish the significance of the discovery, which for the first time documents the complete equipment of an Archaic Texas hunter. It illustrates the technological sophistication of populations often reduced to the image of simple "nomads": these hunters mastered a range of weapons differentiated by prey type, repaired their equipment, planned their movements, and intensively exploited a territory occupied without interruption for over 13 millennia.
