For nearly fourteen centuries its secrets were lost after the last temples closed in 394 CE. It took the discovery of the Rosetta Stone and the genius of Jean-François Champollion for this millennial system to find its voice again.

The Rosetta Stone, discovered in 1799 by soldiers of Napoleon's Egyptian expedition near Rashid (Rosetta) in the Nile delta, proved to be the cornerstone of deciphermentDeciphermentThe reconstruction of the meaning and value of the signs of an unknown script, often from bilingual texts, repeated proper names or statistical regularities.. This stele of black granodiorite, dating to 196 BCE, carried the same decree in three versions: Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic script, and ancient Greek. For the first time, scholars had a bilingual text allowing comparison between systems.

But the path was long. Early researchers such as Thomas Young in Britain understood that some signs were phonetic and that oval cartouches enclosed royal names. Young identified the name of Ptolemy. It was Jean-François Champollion, however, a young French prodigy fluent in Coptic -- a direct descendant of ancient Egyptian -- who made the decisive breakthrough in September 1822. By comparing the cartouches of Ptolemy and Cleopatra, he reconstructed the phonetic alphabet and realised that hieroglyphs combined sounds, syllables, and ideograms in a remarkably sophisticated system.

The hieroglyphic system in its classical form comprised around 750 distinct signs, a figure that climbed to over 6,000 during the Greco-Roman period, as priests multiplied esoteric signs to make sacred writing more opaque to the uninitiated. These signs operated on three principles: phonograms represented sounds (consonants only, with no vowels written), logograms directly denoted an object or action, and determinatives -- unspoken -- clarified the general meaning of a word.

The consequences of this decipherment were immense. Ancient Egypt ceased to be a silent civilisation and became a culture with its voice restored. Thousands of medical, religious, administrative, and literary texts could be read: the Instructions of Ptahhotep, the Pyramid Texts, the medical papyri of Ebers, the battle accounts of Ramesses II. The pharaonic chronology was reconstructed with precision, and a new science -- Egyptology -- took flight.

Today, the decipherment of hieroglyphs remains a living adventure. Artificial intelligence systems are being deployed to identify and transcribe millions of unread papyrus fragments, while excavations regularly yield new texts. The Herculaneum Project in Italy and the archives of Deir el-Bahari in Egypt testify to the vitality of a discipline born from Champollion's genius two centuries ago.
