About 500,000 years ago, on the island of Java, a human ancestor engraved a series of regular zigzags onto a freshwater mussel shell. This seemingly trivial act has upended our understanding of the origins of art and symbolic cognition: the author of this engraving was not Homo sapiensHomo sapiensThe present-day human species, which emerged in Africa around 300,000 years ago, the only surviving human lineage after the extinction of Neanderthals and Denisovans., but Homo erectus, a species that went extinct long before the emergence of our own lineage.1

An Engraved Shell in the Dubois Collection

The discovery rests on an object that had been sitting in the collections of the Naturalis Museum in Leiden, Netherlands, for over a century. Eugène Dubois, the Dutch palaeontologist famous for unearthing Java Man at Trinil in 1891, had brought back hundreds of Pseudodon freshwater bivalve shells along with his fossils. An international team led by Josephine Joordens (Leiden University) re-examined these collections and found, on one of these shells, a remarkable geometric engraving: a series of cross-hatches forming an M or zigzag pattern, only visible under oblique light.1

Dating using argon-argon and optically stimulated luminescence methods places the shell between 430,000 and 540,000 years old. This was not a random act: the engraving is intentional, deep, and regular, requiring controlled pressure and a sharp tool (likely a shark tooth or pointed shell). The engraving predates similar evidence attributed to Homo sapiens in South AfricaAfricaThe cradle of humankind: the continent where the first hominins appeared, then Homo sapiens around 300,000 years ago, before the expansion to the rest of the world. — such as the geometric patterns at Blombos Cave (around 77,000 years ago) — by over 300,000 years.

What Does Such an Engraving Mean?

The central question is whether this pattern represents conscious symbolic behaviourSymbolic behaviourA set of practices (adornment, pigments, art, burial) reflecting symbolic thought; long ascribed to Homo sapiens alone, now attested for Neanderthals too. or a purely motor gesture with no significance. For researchers, several clues point to intentionality: the regularity of the mark, the lack of any obvious functional purpose for the engraved shell, and the technical mastery required to produce such clean incisions on such a hard surface.2

This discovery reflects a fundamental shift in palaeoanthropologyPalaeoanthropologyThe science that studies human evolution from the fossil remains of hominins (bones, teeth, footprints) and their context, to reconstruct our biological origins.: for decades, the ability to produce abstract art was considered the exclusive hallmark of modern humanity. Recent evidence shows that these cognitive behaviours are far older and more widely distributed than previously thought. Homo erectus was already perforating shells to make ornaments, may have practised rudimentary burials, and seems to have had a basic sense of form and symmetry. The Trinil zigzag, modest as it is, is now the oldest known evidence of cognition capable of producing an abstract pattern.

Repositioning the History of Art

The implications of this discovery go beyond a simple chronological record. It forces us to reconsider the cognitive lineage leading to Upper PalaeolithicUpper PalaeolithicThe final phase of the Palaeolithic (c. 45,000 to 10,000 years ago), marked by Homo sapiens in Europe, art, ornaments and a succession of cultures (Aurignacian, Gravettian, Solutrean, Magdalenian). cave art. If Homo erectus was capable of such a gesture 500,000 years ago, it is likely that symbolic capacities did not "emerge" suddenly with Homo sapiens, but developed gradually over hundreds of thousands of years, across several species of the genus Homo.3

This perspective transforms our image of human cognitive evolution: no longer a qualitative leap with Homo sapiens, but a slow continuum whose first expressions reach back well before our species, on the banks of an ancient Javan river half a million years ago.
