Beneath the silt of the confluence of the Scheldt and Sensée rivers at Bouchain in northern France, a several-thousand-year-old dugout canoe had been waiting since the NeolithicNeolithicThe "New Stone Age": a period marked by farming, herding, settlement and pottery, from around 10,000 BC. to be found again. Discovered during planned excavations conducted between 2014 and 2017 by Gilles Leroy (Regional Archaeological Service, DRAC Hauts-de-France), this hollowed log boat is one of the extremely rare Neolithic pirogues found in France, now back after several years of restoration in a Grenoble laboratory specialising in the treatment of waterlogged organic materials.1

Bouchain: An Exceptional Site

Bouchain is a small commune in the Nord department, nestled at the confluence of two significant waterways: the Scheldt, which rises in France before crossing Belgium, and the Sensée. This strategic fluvial site has attracted human populations since prehistoric times. The planned excavations, funded by the Ministry of Culture since 2014, uncovered an exceptionally well-preserved Late Prehistoric (Final Neolithic and Bronze AgeBronze AgeA protohistoric period following the Neolithic, defined by bronze metallurgy (a copper-tin alloy) and the rise of the first cities and states; in Egypt it corresponds to the age of the first pyramids.) site, thanks to the waterlogged sediments that preserved normally perishable organic materials.2

The Bouchain pirogue is a monoxyle dugout, carved from a single tree trunk (probably oak, based on dendrochronological analysis), using stone tools and controlled burning techniques to hollow out the wood. This type of vessel represents one of the earliest known nautical technologies in Europe, enabling navigation on rivers and possibly lakes and coastal estuarine areas.

Neolithic Navigation: Far More Than Previously Thought

The discovery of the Bouchain pirogue adds to a still-limited but growing body of evidence for prehistoric navigation in France and Europe. The Bercy pirogues, discovered in Paris in 1989 during construction work, are the best-known French reference: dating to the Middle Neolithic (around 4,500–3,400 BCE), they are vessels of the same type as the Bouchain one. Other examples have been found in Alpine lakes (in Swiss and Savoyard pile dwellings), Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.3

These discoveries reveal that Neolithic populations in Europe were perfectly competent river navigators, and possibly coastal sailors. The Neolithic exchange networks that distributed Grand-Pressigny flintFlintA hard, brittle siliceous rock, knapped by prehistoric people to produce blades, points and sharp tools. across hundreds of kilometres or Alpine jade to Brittany relied in part on these waterways. The pirogue was not just a fishing or local transport tool: it was a connector between communities, a means of circulating people, goods and ideas.

The Restoration: A Technical Challenge

After its discovery at Bouchain, the pirogue was transferred to a heritage conservation centre specialising in the treatment of waterlogged archaeological organic objects. The consolidation process, which gradually replaces the water in the wood with conservation resins, can take several years. The ultimate goal is complete stabilisation of the object, which will then be displayed at a DRAC Lille depot, allowing researchers to continue studying it and the public to discover its exceptional raw beauty.
