A cave sealed since the Ice Age yields Neanderthal's oldest drawings

These marks are more than 57,000 years old, and everything indicates that they could only have been made by Neanderthals, the sole human occupants of this region at such a remote period1. The demonstration, published in 2023, rests on an argument as simple as it is decisive: after these people passed through, the cave was entirely blocked by sediment, sealing off access for tens of thousands of years.
The site is not, however, a recent discovery. The cavity was spotted in the nineteenth century, then excavated from the early twentieth century onward. But it took the research campaigns launched from the 2000s, and above all the application of modern dating methods, to grasp the exceptional antiquity of what lay hidden there. What had been taken for mere scratches turned out to be a coherent set of deliberate marks, whose organisation and repetition betray intention. La Roche-Cotard thus joins the very small circle of sites where one can, without much ambiguity, attribute a graphic production to a humanity other than our own.

The principle is as follows: the cave wall is covered with a film of soft material, a kind of silty patina friable enough for a finger to leave a clean groove. By running their fingers over this surface, the maker deliberately removes material and draws hollow lines. These gestures are not random: they form panels, series of parallel grooves, arched tracings, and clustered dots. It is precisely this organisation that sets them apart from simple animal scratches or natural accidents of the rock.
To establish that these grooves were indeed the work of a human hand and not the product of cave bears or flowing water, the scientific team carried out methodical work. They recorded each tracing, produced three-dimensional models through photogrammetry, then compared the shape, depth, and spacing of the grooves with experimental marks made by volunteers. The results agree: the morphology of the tracings matches that of human fingers drawn across a soft surface, and not the claw marks of a carnivore or the effects of erosion. Some panels evoke fan-shaped forms, others wavy series or dotted alignments, but none represents an animal or a recognisable figure. This is an essential point of caution: one must distinguish abstract, organised engraving from what is called figurative art, the kind that depicts a horse, a bison, or a hand. At La Roche-Cotard, nothing is figurative. The precise meaning of these gestures escapes us entirely, and it will probably escape us forever.
Proof by sealing: a cave locked shut
The heart of the demonstration lies not only in the engravings themselves, but in what happened to them afterward. Once the human occupation ended, the cave was gradually filled with sediment washed in during a cold period. This infill acted as a natural plug, completely blocking the entrance and cutting the interior off from any outside access. No one, neither human nor animal, could enter the cavity any longer. Its contents were thus locked inside a time capsule, safe from any alteration, until the site was reopened in modern times.
This argument is decisive. If the cave was sealed at a date that can be measured, then the engravings it contains are necessarily older than that sealing. Remaining cautious about the date required a robust method. This technique measures the time elapsed since grains of sediment, in particular quartz, were last exposed to daylight. The team did not carry out one or two isolated measurements, but fifty OSL dates on the sediments that block the cave3. This multiplication of analyses lends the result a rare solidity. The conclusion is clear: the cavity was sealed, with the engravings inside, at least 57,000 years ago, a value carrying a margin of three millennia, and perhaps as much as 75,000 years ago. In other words, the age of 57,000 years is a floor, a cautious minimum; the tracings could be considerably older still. This lower bound is already enough to place La Roche-Cotard well before the arrival of the first modern humans in the region, which locks in the Neanderthal attribution.
A record taken from Gibraltar
Until this publication, the title of oldest engraving attributed to Neanderthal belonged to another emblematic site: Gorham's Cave, in Gibraltar, at the southern tip of Europe. There, a cross-hatched motif had been uncovered, a kind of grid incised into the rock, dated to around 39,000 years. This discovery, announced in 2014, had already caused a sensation by showing that Neanderthal was capable of producing deliberate abstract motifs. La Roche-Cotard pushes this limit back by nearly twenty millennia, and doubtless more.
This shift in the record is no anecdote. It sets Neanderthal's symbolic capacity within a far greater depth of time, at a period when Homo sapiens did not yet share the continent with them. One cannot, therefore, suspect any influence from our species, nor any simple cultural borrowing: what we observe at La Roche-Cotard is an autonomous production, born in an exclusively Neanderthal world. The site thus joins a growing body of evidence, perforated shells, pigments, feathers, arranged structures, that sketch the portrait of a vanished humanity far more complex than long believed. Neanderthal was not the dull-witted brute of old depictions, but a being endowed with an organised mental life, capable of gratuitous and intentional gestures on the wall of a cave.
What these marks say, and what they keep silent
Faced with such discoveries, the temptation to speak of art, or even to read a message into them, is strong. Rigour demands that we resist this enthusiasm. What did these grooves mean to those who made them? A game, a rite, a marker, a sign of presence, the expression of an emotion? No one knows, and it is honest to admit that the meaning will probably remain forever beyond our reach. What can be affirmed, on the other hand, is the intention: these marks are neither accidental nor utilitarian. They testify to a will to transform a surface, to leave an organised trace, to act upon the world for reasons other than survival. The significance of this research extends beyond a single isolated site in the Loire Valley. By delivering sealed and firmly dated engravings, La Roche-Cotard provides what the Neanderthal case most sorely lacked: proof that is hard to contest. Where other discoveries always left themselves open to doubt, possible contamination, uncertain dating, the discreet presence of Homo sapiens, the sedimentary lock of the Touraine cave shuts the door on such objections. The authors of the study, gathered around Jean-Claude Marquet, have thus offered prehistory a rare and precious foothold4.
The work must now continue. Other cavities, elsewhere in Europe, may preserve similar tracings that have so far been neglected or misinterpreted, for want of imagining they could be so old. The lesson of La Roche-Cotard is also methodological: it is by combining fine recording, three-dimensional modelling, experimentation, and multiple datings that one manages to make marks speak that the eye alone might have confused with mere scratches. As these tools spread, the map of Europe's earliest graphic expressions will likely grow richer still, and Neanderthal will occupy an ever larger place upon it. The cave of Langeais, which stayed silent for more than fifty millennia, will in the end have yielded one of the oldest symbolic gestures known on our continent.
